Program begins at 10am in front of the Hermitage mansion



On January 8, 1815, Major General Andrew Jackson led a small, poorly-equipped army to victory against eight thousand British troops at the Battle of New Orleans. The victory made Jackson a national hero and eventually propelled him to White House, making him our nation's seventh president.


The anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans was widely celebrated with parties and dances during the nineteenth century, especially in the South. An 1860 New York Times article, published January 10, describes a typical celebration for the day:


"The Tammany Society or Colombian Order celebrated last night the Anniversary of the Battle of New-Orleans. The commemoration lacked neither in numbers nor dignity...The ceiling was canopied in the national colors, with striking effect. On the floor crowds of dancers assembled, and continued their pleasures without intermission until a few minutes before 12 o'clock."

Come to The Hermitage this Saturday, January 8th, to relive a time-honored tradition and to celebrate the 196th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans with FREE admission all day!


The traditional wreath-laying ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the Tennessee Army National Guard Color Guard at the tomb of President Andrew Jackson. The ceremony will also feature a keynote speech from Nashville Mayor and recently named "Tennessean of the Year," Karl Dean, and a presentation by the Daughters of 1812.


Special additions to this year's commemoration will be the introduction of a new biography of Rachel Donelson Jackson. Titled A Being So Gentle, the volume's author Patricia Brady will conduct a lecture and discussion at 1:00 p.m. that will be followed by a book signing. The book will be available for purchase in the Hermitage Museum Store.

Donate Christmas decorations

As you start to assemble your Christmas trees, decorate the mantle, and hang the wreath on the door, if you come across any decorations you no longer want - DON'T THROW THEM AWAY!!

Graceworks is collecting decorations for those affected by the flood in May. This is a GREAT way to get rid of decorations you no longer use without adding to a landfill, or for those of you that need an excuse to go shopping...... use this! No amount too small..... want to get a new Christmas Tree Skirt - donate the old one! Need new stockings this year.... donate the old ones! Out shopping for some new ornaments.... grab a few extra and donate those!!

A new initiative this year is called Noah’s Christmas, intended to offer those affected by the May floods an opportunity to replace Christmas decorations, ornaments and displays for free.

The decorations will be distributed on Saturday, December 11 from 9 am until 4 pm at Watson Glen Shopping Center, next to K-Mart on Highway 96 in Franklin on a first come, first served basis. These decorations are available to anyone affected by the May 2nd flood with a valid FEMA number. Each family, with a photo ID and FEMA number, will be given a shopping bag to fill with their choice of donated items.

Graceworks is asking for donations of gently used holiday decorations, which can be delivered to any Brentwood fire station prior to December 10, or to Graceworks Ministries. Financial donations may also be made to Graceworks Ministries to purchase additional items for this program.

Piano, anyone?

Hi! I have an old upright piano that is quite old. It isn't in the best of shape but it does play. I have had it tuned a couple of times and the guy said its old and okay for a beginners. I would like to give it to anyone that would be interested in it. It has been stored in my garage for about 4 years now and I really have no room for it.
